Electronic and engineering firm, Siemens has confirmed the continuation of its global partnership with Greenpower Education Trust.
The agreement will allow Greenpower to build on its reputation as a key trainer of young people in engineering and continue to inspire a greater number of students to choose engineering as their career path, in the UK and overseas.
[portfolio_slideshow]Since this collaboration in 2009, the trust has seen the inclusion of up to 500 schools in the programme.
Goodwood Motor Circuit is to host Greenpower’s first ever International Final this Sunday, October 12th, which will be attended by over 100 competing teams from the UK, Europe and USA and South Africa.
Jeremy Way, Greenpower CEO said: “Siemens is one of our oldest, biggest and most important partners. They truly understand what we are trying to do at Greenpower Education Trust at a base level – the UK is in desperate need of an influx of new, young engineers and there is nothing in the current school curriculum that will deliver it.”
“We are trying to plug that gap, with the help of companies like Siemens, by providing students and young people with a project-based learning activity that gives them the hands-on, practical experience they will need, as well as the inspiration to choose a career in engineering that they might otherwise not have selected.”
It’s predicted that the number of engineering graduates and apprentices needs to double, if the 1.86 million deficit of people with engineering skills are to be met by 2020.
Students of all ages can enter the Greenpower initiative – from primary school to university undergraduates. The three race championships begin with Goblins (9-11 year olds), IET Formula 24 (11-16 year olds) through to IET Formula 24+ (16-25 year olds). Students from IET Formula 24+ will even get the chance to design and build full-scale all-electric racing cars.
The International Final will be made up of cars from the IET Formula 24 and IET Formula 24+ seasons, in addition to the Greenpower Corporate Challenge – which includes teams from Prodrive, Lockheed Martin, and Jaguar Land Rover.
