One of my favourites the Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC wins the ‘Best Real MPG’ in honestjohns awards
The frugal Civic scores an average 66.2mpg based on thousands of reviews from everyday drivers
An easy to drive car and an easy to achieve great MPG. The Honda’s 1.6 i-DTEC engine has been rated as best small diesel on the market with its ‘refined nature and impressive performance’.
The impressive real-world fuel efficiency of Honda’s super-frugal 1.6 i-DTEC engine has received yet more plaudits, with the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC scooping the prize for ‘Best Real MPG’ at the 2014 honestjohn.co.uk awards. The website also rated the 1.6 i-DTEC engine as best small diesel on the market. Having met ‘HonestJohn’ at quite a few events around Europe, this man and his team really knows their stuff and what’s what in cars today.
The award is based on real-world MPG figures submitted by real drivers through the HonestJohn website, the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC took top, based on an average score of 66.2mpg. As I would have also imagined the Honda line-up throughout did very well. Averaging 91 per cent real MPG compared to official quoted figures, some 5 per cent above the industry average.
The Real MPG calculator used on HonestJohn was launched in June 2011 to offer a real world alternative to official quoted MPG figures, based on the experience of everyday drivers. To date the site has received more than 52,000 submissions from owners covering a wide variety of makes and models. The Best Real MPG award is calculated by finding the best MPG figures submitted over the past year for a particular model derivative, allowing users to see exactly which engines are the most economical.
“HonestJohn rates the Honda 1.6 i-DTEC engine as the best small diesel on the market with its refined nature and impressive performance. And further enhancing its appeal is its real world fuel economy. Figures submitted to Real MPG over the last 12 months show a realistic economy figure of 66.2mpg. At a time when running costs are a key factor in choosing a car, the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC makes a very strong case for itself.”Dan Harrison, editor of HJ
Leon Brannan, Head of Cars, Honda (UK) comments: “This award once again confirms the incredible efficiency of the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC and the reputation of its light but powerful engine as the best small diesel on the UK market. With ratings based on the experiences of thousands of everyday drivers, these figures show just how the Civic performs in real-world conditions.”
The Best Real MPG award comes hot on the heels of Honest John naming Honda as the top performing manufacturer for MoT pass rates. A review of 24.5 million MoT records obtained by the site revealed that an average 87 per cent of Honda cars passed their first MoT, compared to a national average of 80 per cent. In a further boost the British-built Jazz supermini and CR-V SUV topped the model leader board with an impressive 90 per cent passing their MoTs first time round. Additionally, Honest John recently named the Honda Jazz as the best used car for under £4,000, achieving an excellent 84 per cent first time MoT pass rate.
The Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC offers a class-leading combination of fuel economy and performance – emitting just 94 g/km of CO2 with a powerful 120PS. The engine was the first to be launched in Europe under Honda’s flagship Earth Dreams Technology environmental programme; offering customers an outstanding balance of high fuel economy, low emissions and dynamic performance.
