Taking a real pop at the top title – King of the Hill a 405PS Defender Works V8 has been announced. That’s serious power for a Defender.
Land Rover Classic has chosen to endow this charmer with a 5.0-litre V8 engine along with an 8-speed ZF transmission.
Not short on performance, with a prairie crossing top speed of 106mph….in a Defender and 0-60mph in just 5.6 seconds. Just 150 of these beasts will be built, and with an elevated price tag starting at £150k.
The vehicle pays homage to the V8 Land Rover Series III Stage 1 V8 and the 50th Anniversary Edition, the model I purchased in Cheltenham from new and have since sold. It was by far the thirstiest vehicle I ever owned even with its paltry 190hp in comparison. I note there are no numbers released for emissions or mpg so far on this 70th Edition.
Fortunately, the 70th Edition isn’t just a power upgrade; it’s equipped with uprated bi-LED lights, a sport-mode, uprated brakes and handling kit (springs, dampers and anti-roll bars). To complete the look 18-inch diamond turned sawtooth alloy wheels and R18 all -terrain tyres.
On the inside is a full Windsor leather interior with Recaro sports seats and even an infotainment system. The 70th Edition will be available in eight colours, including two satins, contrasted with a Santorini Black roof wheel arches and grille. The finishing touches are machined aluminium door handles, fuel cap and bonnet lettering.
Land Rover knew the demand was there back in the last days of the Defender so this latest 70th Anniversary model will satisfy, for the well-heeled.
A selection of the parts inspired by the 70th Edition will also be available for the recent Defender models, including power upgrade kits for the TDCi engine, fast road-suspension kits and upgrades for braking.
I don’t think we will be seeing too many of these doing what they are best at.
