Another worthy contender in the supermini segment.

Mazda 2015, a company, on the up and banging the drum. Mazda now has the newest range of cars on the market with five new models just this year. The fabulous new MX-5 and the highly anticipated new Mazda CX-3 compact SUV, (coming next), are still to be launched in the UK following the re-energized Mazda6 and CX-5.

Sales at this niche manufacturer are increasing to pre-recession levels. The Madza cars with added Sky Activ technology and Kodo design language have over the last three years transformed the entire range. Mazda’s are all now very appealing and this new contender in the ‘Fiesta’ market is well worth a look.

The All-New Mazda2 combines all the best of the previous Mazda2 attributes into an upmarket and fresh looking package. This model is slightly bigger and roomier, than before. Styling nods are taken from Mazda6 and Mazda3. The sharp looking grill and new lights, creating a bold, bright cheerful presence.

All Mazda’s make you aware of quality engineering and well chosen materials used. In the car the driving position was very comfortable with the supermini feel, big feeling inside, small out. There is some excellent equipment as standard with a seven inch display combined with a simple rotary controller, at hand by the gear lever combined with a really useful volume control knob, something that Mazda have now extended to other models form the Mazda3. On the top model a category first head up display is offered along with reversing camera and other luxury paraphernalia. All models are better equipped than many of their competitors. The turbine style air vents ad a sporty feel to the cabin, along with the stitched and carbon fibre look and sporty chrome detailing.

The electric power steering is lightly weighted as you would expect for a small car, on the road it is fun to drive in a sporty tidy way. All manual cars feature a slick gear shift bringing an MX-5 style short throw. A five speed and six speed transmission is available dependent on engine choice.

The rear is adequate for two adults although the boot space was slightly limited, split folding seats are available in the SE-L models.

The new range comes with a large choice of 12 petrol and four diesel variations. On the launch we got to sample the top of the range 115PS Sport Nav, the 90PS petrol and the 105ps diesel. With all the lightening techniques used by Mazda the new cars is 22 percent stiffer, but 10% lighter overall which means fuels savings.

The car can be equipped with safety equipment usually found on larger cars, lane departure warning (LDW) and the Mazda Smart city brake support (SCBS). The 115ps even offers a first in its class, head up display.

The efficient 1.5-litre petrol will be the choice for many however, the diesel was my favourite of the three with a clean 89g/km CO2. A smooth engine and an achievable 60-64mph across Dartmoor and the surrounding countryside made this a worthy contender. The diesel maybe slightly pricier but there are savings to be made on fuel over the petrol model.

The petrols were very good, cheap to run and with low emissions from 105 – 117 g/km CO2 dependent on engine, the more powerful 90PS would be the choice, with a bit more ooomph.

Personally I would like more individuality and customer personalisation options, however, understated is the way Mazda does it. Some of the cars at the launch had ‘go-faster’ sporty graphics, thats it more of that, stripes and shiny bits for me.

Overall the All-New Mazda2 will be a great small car, available in a cracking range of colours. The brilliant Mazda Soul Red Metallic, is an option.

The residuals with this car are expected to be high and as usual Mazda have some great deals on PCP available now. All-New Mazda2 has just hit the showrooms now.
