The Electric Hybrid Plug-In Golf GTE destined for success.
The Golf GTE will be available through all Volkswagen Dealers. The other electric vehicles in the range, the e-up! and e-Golf are only available through a network of 25 e-Retailers.
The new Golf GTE fits in the line-up alongside the petrol-powered GTI and diesel GTD. The new car is driven by two engines: a 1.4-litre 150 PS TSI direct-injection petrol engine and a 102 PS electric motor. The combination of powertrains together produce a maximum power of 204PS and a potential range of 580 miles, maximum torque is 350 Nm (258lbs ft). The transmission is a specially developed six-speed DSG gearbox for hybrid vehicles.
There are five operating modes available on the Golf GTE – ‘E-mode’, ‘GTE mode’, ‘Battery Hold’, ‘Battery charge’ and ‘Hybrid Auto’. In pure electric mode (activated at the press of a button), the Golf GTE can travel up to 31 miles. Electric power can also be saved – very useful when driving in a zero-emissions zone. In just electric mode the car is still quite brisk with a top speeds of up to 81 mph.
In combination with the TSI engine, the Golf GTE can sprint from zero to 62 mph in a fairly healthy 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 138 mph. One of the key benefits is th fuel economy with a combined cycle figure of 166 mpg and CO2 emissions of 39 g/km. The Golf GTE is exempt from VED and the Congestion Charge.
Quick Charging, the Golf GTE can be charged in 3.75 hours from a domestic mains outlet, or 2.25 hours from a domestic wallbox.
The Golf GTE is available in five-door only and in one hig-spec trim level. Visually, it combines elements of the e-Golf and Golf GTI, with C-shaped LED daytime running lights and aerodynamic horizontal ‘fins’. 18-inch ‘Serron’ alloy wheels are fitted as standard.
Inside the GTE the Golf GTI red highlights are turned to blue – matched to the stitching on the steering wheel, gear lever gaiter and seats, and a blue stripe in the tartan pattern on the sports seats. Touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio and Bluetooth is standard. The optional navigation includes bespoke EV features, giving the ability to identify useful charging points and range destinations.
The Golf GTE is also equipped with an e-manager. The system allows the driver to preset vehicle charging, as well as interior cooling or heating. A Car-Net app is also available for popular smartphones.
Available to order from today, costing £28,035 with first deliveries in March.
