The new engines just make a great car even more polished.
The Cross Country models are my favourites in the V40 range, the fit would be just right for my lifestyle with the welcome extra height and AWD.
The V40 – always an enjoyable car to drive. The range is now available with the 2-litre, 4 cylinder Drive-e power train which has been introduced to much of the range in the last year. Volvo are confident thats this efficiency focus on their power trains across the entire range is welcome and desirable.
The range of engines has been rationalised from sixteen down to two. A new class leading common rail diesel with 190hp and a 245hp petrol with emissions of 135g/km. Both with highly impressive figures for emissions of 99g/km and 135g/km.
In todays high-tech engines the number of cylinders becomes less important. The engines are now so much more sophisticated, bringing the economy of four cylinders, exciting drivability, increased power curves and higher performance, than today’s 6 cylinder engines. In comparison there is a noticeable size and weight reduction, with real fuel economy savings of up to 30%.
The engines can now be increased in power by efficient use of turbocharging, supercharging and electrification. The range can now accommodate, diesel engines from 120 – 230hp and petrol from 140 – 300hp.
These Drive-e engines are the result of a massive, in-house investment by the Swedish Brand. The engines will be built at the high tech plant in Skövde, Sweden and implemented across the whole range by 2015. All engines are now Euro 6 compliant until 2017.
Along with the engines the transmission range has been reduced from eight different units to just two. A 6-speed manual and a super smooth 8-speed automatic. Notable in the new electronic eight speed gearbox is ECO+ a function which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5% dependent on driving behaviour.
Much of the V40 range were available to drive in some glorious colours, Flamenco red, Raw Copper and Osmium Grey. One stood out to me a D4 Cross Country in Power Blue paint, a 190hp diesel with the 8-speed geartronic.
The V40 accounts for 44% of the UK sales for Volvo and the UK is the biggest market for the V40. On safety the V40 holds the trophy for the safest car NCAP have ever tested.
The V40 models we had on offer at the launch, were all exceptionally well specced. The very comfortable charcoal leather interior. The Volvo dynamic dashboard display, combined with the superb textures of the materials used on the dashboard and interior. The interior night illumination, in purple or red. All combine to make the Volvo V40, always a welcome place to be.
