The new Volvo City Safety AEB braking technology is now fitted as standard on the Volvo V40.

The new safety features of AEB braking mean lower insurance ratings for all-new Volvo V40 after independent tests were carried out at the renowned Thatcham Research Centre.

After many rigorous tests it was concluded the new AEB system was so effective at preventing low speed accidents that cars fitted with it should be taken into consideration when deciding insurance ratings.

Since the test the Association of British insurers has introduced AEB into its rating calculations. This is a first time so soon after a new technology has become available and it proves the industry confidence in such a solution which will significantly reduce personal injury and accident damage.

The AEB low-speed collision avoidance system functions at speeds up to 31 mph on the V40. It tracks speeds of traffic in front and automatically brakes if the driver fails to react in time when the vehicle in front slows down or stops – or if the car is approaching a stationary vehicle too fast. The award-winning* technology was first fitted as standard to all Volvo XC60 models, when the model launched in 2008, in a world first. Following its success in reducing accidents and injury, Volvo took the decision to fit City Safety as standard to all subsequent new models reflecting the brand’s commitment to developing the safest vehicles across its range.

Thatcham commented that AEB technology is the most significant new safety innovation in the car industry today.
