The Maserati Levante is still a relatively fresh luxury SUV which combines performance and handling with premium finishes and comfort. Launched in 2016 the Levante has joined a host of competition and offers a balanced selection of features and performance to help it compete, if not stand out.

Initially this was only available with a 3.0-litre diesel which managed 271 BHP but after the first year a more performance focused 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol arrived to deliver 424 BHP in the form of the Levante S. A less tuned petrol engine was added in 2018 then the Levante Trofeo arrived with a massive 575 BHP alongside the 523 BHP Levante GTS, to appeal to performance fans.

Don't expect impressive MPG but you can hope for comfort and luxury even in the base trim models. Standard features include dual-zone climate controls, leather trim, active air suspension, DAB radio and a powered tailgate to name just a few. This still offers logistical uses with a large 580-litre boot and enough rear seat room for large adults. So this will serve as a family car but also offers executive level comforts and sporty performance for those that want.

Key rivals for the Maserati Levante include the Porsche Cayenne, more affordable BMW X5 and X6, plus Audi's Q7 and Q8. Go even more premium with the Bentley Bentayga or the similarly featured Mercedes GLE.

Should you buy a used Maserati Levante?

The Maserati Levante is a great SUV option if you want luxury and performance even in the base model. It also gives you that Italian design flair and the Maserati badge. The engine choices mean you can find an option that's less expensive to run but generally, if you want power and performance, this has offerings for that too.

Even on the entry level model you get a lot of premium features that you'd need the top end trim in some manufacturers to get. That includes leather seats, front and rear parking sensors with a rear camera, heated front seats and optional adaptive driving tech.

You only really need to spend more if you want those faster models that offer features like red brake-callipers, 20-inch alloys and gearshift paddles.

All Levante models come with all-wheel drive with the standard mode sending power to the rear wheels but in slippery situations the front wheels can also be used for traction. Expect an eight-speed auto gearbox on all models as well as modes that you can select to have the power tuned to suit the situation you need it for.

Expect lots of variations in the used market as there are 28 different interior trim colours alone to pick from, plus many other extras like gloss-black roof rails, larger alloys and more.

What’s the best used Maserati Levante model to buy?

The Levante S comes with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol that offers 424 BHP which is a great option since even this entry level variant is full of rich features. 

Go up a level to the Levante GranLusso and you get larger 19-inch alloys as well as wood trim and leather seats. Or pick the GranSport, for the same price, and you instead get 20-inch alloys, red brake callipers, gloss-black exterior, sports steering wheel, carbon-fibre trim and gearshift paddles. 

If it's pure power you want then there are also V8 petrol engine options with 522 and 572 BHP in the GTS and Trofeo models. In all cases there is a factory fitted tow bar which means you can pull a 2,700 KG braked trailer if needed.
