The new Volkswagen ID.Tiguan has been revealed as the replacement for the ID.4 and ID.5, bringing a new design, a more upmarket interior and an electric range of up to 443 miles. The new family SUV is expected to cost from around £38,000 when it arrives in the UK in early 2027.

Although based on the existing ID.4, the ID.Tiguan has undergone a substantial overhaul. Changes include a redesigned dashboard with more physical controls, improved interior materials and the option of a passenger touchscreen.

Three power options will be offered initially, including two rear-wheel-drive versions and a 299PS all-wheel-drive model. A larger 90kWh battery, offering the maximum 443-mile range, will follow later in 2027.

The name change is part of Volkswagen's move towards using familiar names for its electric cars, following the introduction of the ID.Polo.

New Volkswagen ID.Tiguan price and release date

Volkswagen hasn't yet confirmed UK prices or opened order books for the ID.Tiguan, but the first cars are expected to arrive in early 2027.

The ID.Tiguan goes on sale in Germany on 13 October, with prices around €2,000 higher than the outgoing ID.4. Based on this increase, a UK starting price of approximately £38,000 is expected, although this has yet to be confirmed.

For comparison, the outgoing ID.4 starts at £36,995 in the UK and is now available from existing stock only.

Some ID.4 versions qualified for the government's £1,500 Electric Car Grant, but it's not yet clear whether the ID.Tiguan will be eligible.

New Volkswagen ID.Tiguan electric motor, battery and range

The ID.Tiguan will initially be available with three powertrain options, offering a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The entry-level model combines a 190PS electric motor with a 58kWh battery, giving a claimed range of around 280 miles. That's an improvement on the equivalent ID.4, which offered up to 268 miles.

A more powerful rear-wheel-drive version gets a 286PS motor and a larger 77kWh battery, increasing the claimed range to 373 miles. That's around 20 miles more than the comparable ID.4.

The range-topping model at launch uses the same 77kWh battery but adds a second electric motor to drive the front wheels. This Allmotion version produces 299PS and offers improved traction, although its official range has yet to be detailed.

All three versions support DC rapid charging at up to 165kW, according to Volkswagen.

For drivers who regularly cover longer distances, a new 90kWh battery will join the range later in 2027, offering a maximum claimed range of 443 miles. Towing capacity has also increased. The 58kWh version can tow up to 1,800kg, while models with the 77kWh battery can tow up to 2,000kg.

New Volkswagen ID.Tiguan design, interior and space

The ID.Tiguan introduces Volkswagen's latest Pure Positive design language to its electric family SUV range, giving it a more angular appearance than the outgoing ID.4.

At the front, there are redesigned bumpers, new headlights and a full-width light bar, with an illuminated Volkswagen badge available as an option. A stronger horizontal shoulder line runs along the sides, while the rear gets a full-width light cluster and optional illuminated badge.

Traditional pull-style door handles also make a return.

Inside, Volkswagen has responded to criticism of the ID.4's touch-sensitive controls by bringing back more physical buttons and switches.

The air conditioning and audio volume can now be adjusted using conventional controls, while the door handles and electric window switches have been redesigned to make them easier to use.

Passenger space is largely unchanged, but the boot has grown slightly to 534 litres, one litre more than the ID.4. There's also a new 32-litre storage compartment under the bonnet, providing somewhere to keep charging cables and other smaller items.

New Volkswagen ID.Tiguan technology and infotainment

Despite the return of physical controls, the ID.Tiguan features more display technology than its predecessor.

A new 10-inch digital instrument display sits ahead of the driver, with optional graphics inspired by classic Volkswagen models including the Mk4 Golf, Beetle and Race Touareg.

The central infotainment touchscreen measures 15 inches, while a 12-inch passenger display is available for the first time on a European Volkswagen model.

The optional passenger screen can be used to access apps and entertainment, including films and television, with technology designed to prevent the driver from viewing video content while the car is moving.

Other upgrades include wireless phone charging, improved interior materials and ambient lighting. The ID.Tiguan also supports a smartphone-based digital key and vehicle-to-load technology, allowing owners to power external electrical devices, such as an electric bicycle, using the car's battery.

One-pedal driving is now standard, allowing drivers to slow the car using regenerative braking without needing to press the brake pedal in many situations.

Volkswagen has also upgraded its driver assistance systems. Optional Connected Travel Assist supports assisted lane changes on motorways, alongside additional functions designed to help drivers in traffic.

Further options include ventilated and massaging front seats, a 480W Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic glass roof.

New Volkswagen ID.Tiguan trim levels

Three trim levels will be offered: Life, Style and R-Line. The entry-level Life comes with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control, 19-inch alloy wheels and smartphone-based key functionality.

Moving up to Style adds IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, illuminated Volkswagen badges, 30-colour ambient lighting, upgraded interior materials and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The range-topping R-Line gets sportier front and rear bumpers, 20-inch alloy wheels, sports front seats and a heated sports steering wheel. It also features Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and progressive steering.

New Volkswagen ID.Tiguan rivals and used alternatives

The ID.Tiguan enters a competitive market for electric family SUVs, with the Tesla Model Y likely to be one of its closest rivals. The Model Y offers generous passenger and luggage space, while the recently updated Toyota bZ4X is another alternative for buyers looking for an electric SUV.

Other rivals include the Kia EV5, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Explorer. The latter is particularly relevant because it shares its underlying platform with Volkswagen's electric SUV range.

Buyers who don't want to wait until 2027 could also consider a used Volkswagen ID.4, which offers similar practicality and is likely to cost considerably less than the new ID.Tiguan.

Used Tesla Model Ys and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are also worth considering, particularly for drivers looking to get more equipment and electric range for their money.
