Buying a car is one thing, but paying to run it is another. When it comes to servicing, how much it will cost can be one of the great unknowns each time your car heads to the dealer's workshop for a check-up.

However, to tame anxiety and remove budget stress, planning ahead is possible by buying a bundle of services for your car as a package, which you pay for in advance. This can be done either outright or in monthly installments that are as easy to manage as a streaming subscription.

Either way you choose to pay, the amount is calculated at a rate which is fixed at the point you buy it, protecting you from the risk of future price rises for parts and labour costs.

Whether you drive a petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric vehcile produced by a Volkswagen Group brand, there’s a tailored servicing package available to suit your vehicle and budget. By choosing a Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS) service plan, you’re guaranteeomg that any work carried out will be done at one of the national network of service centres by trained technicians using approved and warrantied parts.

Each time your car is brought in for a service, it’s also given a thorough inspection, ensuring it’s at maximum health for many reliable miles to come.

This also pays off in the long run, as any problems can be taken care of right away, before they become more serious. What’s more, all service work is recorded, helping to maintain your car’s value when being sold on, as it gives any future buyer confidence it’s been well looked after, plus the benefit of any remaining services left in the plan, as this transfers with the vehicle to any new owner.

What is a VWFS service plan?

The service plan that’s right for you depends on the brand of Volkswagen Group you drive. Petrol, diesel and hybrid cars are grouped together, with electric vehicles offered a separate set of available plans, due to their differing servicing needs.

Petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicles are offered three different plans, depending on the age of the car. Each features an inspection designed to keep engines performing well and to highlight any potential issues early on so they can be addressed when they first happen, rather than when you're stranded at the roadside.

If you drive an electric car, again there are three plans to pick from, based on its age. However, they’re focused on the specific needs of EVs, including checks of the high-voltage battery, charging cables, brakes and software systems to ensure they’re all working as intended.

All plans include work undertaken by technicians who are specially trained to take care of electric cars.

What's typically included in petrol, diesel and hybrid VWFS service plans?

Volkswagen cars' Standard Plan is intended for petrol diesel or hybrid cars that are 1-15 years old. It includes thorough inspections, two services and two MOTs, the replacement of the pollen filter which traps tiny particles, preventing them from entering your car's air conditioning system if it's needed, and a diagnostic check for any outstanding software updates.

The Plus Plan is aimed at cars that are 1-15 years old and adds a change of the engine's air filter if it needs it, plus a set of spark plugs and – for diesel-engined models – a fuel filter change if required.

The top-tier All-in Plan is designed for ultimate peace of mind for cars aged 3-6 years and with fewer than 100,000 miles on the clock. This includes everything above, plus two years of roadside assistance and a two-year warranty.

What's included in electric VWFS service plans?

For Volkswagen's electric cars, the Essentials Plan covers the first two years of servicing for cars that are 1-15 years old. It includes a battery State of Health (SoH) check and an MOT, a change of the pollen filter and brake fluid if needed, plus any software updates.

Step up to the Standard Plan and this covers the recommended servicing for four years and two MOTs, effectively doubling what's included in the Essentials Plan.

The top Plus Plan includes everything in the Standard Plan but adds two like-for-like tyre changes when needed.

All plans are designed to cover the main servicing costs, giving confidence that when your car goes to the garage you won’t be hit with a large, potentially unaffordable bill.

However, plans don’t include wear and tear items, which include brake pad and disc replacement, glass replacement, wheel alignment, air conditioning regassing, wiper blades or tyres.

Which brands are VWFS service plans available for?

VWFS service plans are available across the the majority of Volkswagen Group brands, with the exceptions being Bugatti, Lamborghini and Porsche.

What each brand's service plans comprise of and how much they cost varies, with more specific details available via the links shared below:

Can you add a VWFS service plan to a finance or lease agreement?

A service plan can be added to any VW PCP or PCH lease agreement. Although the service plan is separate to your finance deal, you can opt to bundle the payments together into your single, locked-in monthly payment, allowing you to budget accordingly and easily.

You can do this at the dealership or online when you sign your finance deal, so it’s all taken care of. As it’s a separate policy, it’s also possible to add a service plan at a later date, taking care of your PCP or lease vehicle and ensuring there are no unexpected extra costs when it comes to return it.

What this means for you

If you’re a driver that prizes convenience above all else, a service plan pays dividends because you can simply sign-up and forget about big service bills, including being inflation-proof as your price is locked in when you buy the plan, not when you’re having your car serviced at some point in the future.

You also don’t have to wonder whether your car is being looked after by the right people or fitted with the correct replacement parts, as that has to be done at an approved service centre. Work is also warrantied and traceable, adding to the car’s service history, maintaining its value when it comes to selling and because the plan stays with the vehicle, any remaining services are transferred to the new owner.

No, a service plan and a warranty are designed for different things. The service plan takes care of the cost of required maintenance at a fixed price and is intended for routine use at regular intervals. A warranty comes in to fix unexpected mechanical or electrical faults or failures.

Service plans can be used as soon as you sign up and a link to book a service is sent via email to get you started. However, the plan can only be cancelled within 14 days, provided you haven’t had any work done. Otherwise, VWFS service plans are non-refundable.

If you do decide to cancel your plan, this can be done via email at SPcancellation@vwfs.co.uk.

Although VWFS service plans are non-refundable, the plan is for the car, not the owner, so can be transferred. In order to do this, a transfer can be arranged via VWFS’s customer services at CustomerServices@vwfs.co.uk if you can supply the new owner’s name and address. The new owner can also make the switch by sending a copy of the car’s V5 document.

Although plans don’t include wear and tear items such as wiper blades and brake pads, which electric cars still need to be replaced from time to time, a service plan for an EV is worth it if you like to have your budget set. The added benefit is that a plan isn’t subject to inflationary rises. With new technology, the service plan also gives the car a full, manufacturer service history, which adds confidence when it comes to sell, preserving the car’s value.
