This is a big, luxurious car, which means that even if you can get a decently priced used example the running costs and maintenance aspect needs to be remembered. The BMW 6 Series is brilliant for anyone needing to cover lots of miles and it’ll do that while providing lots of comfort along the way.

The Coupe example, in particular, manages to take that up a notch or two and really looks the part. However, while it’s reasonably practical it makes less sense for anyone with a carload of passengers to shift. Head for the four-door edition instead.

What’s the best used BMW 6 Series model to buy?

BMW has kept the model range for the BMW 6 Series relatively compact, making it much easier to understand the nuances of different versions. 

Despite being the entry-level offering, SE trim crams in all the luxury and technology the average GT customer needs. It also avoids the stiffer suspension of the M Sport model, and loses very little in terms of additional equipment. 

Engine choices will be dependent on how you plan to use your BMW 6 Series. Longer cross-country journeys would make the 640d diesel a perfect choice. It returns impressive fuel economy, is quiet on the motorway, and still offers a decent turn of pace when needed. 

For those looking to use their BMW 6 Series less frequently, there is an argument to be made for going all-out with the V8 petrol 650i. It sounds wonderful and is seriously quick. Higher fuel costs and other expenses will be less of an issue for infrequent use, too.

• BMW 6 Series 3.0L 640d: The straight-six diesel engine variant is ever-popular providing 313PS, which means a decent level of performance while still delivering on the economy front with up to 50mpg and more possible. It’ll get from 0-62mph in just 5.5 seconds while the top speed is 155mph.

• BMW 6 Series 3.0L petrol: The straight-six petrol engine is worth a look too, with a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds although many feel the diesel offers a little more of a muscular edge. Nevertheless, economy-wise it should be good for between 36.2mpg and 37.2mpg.

• BMW 6 Series 4.4L petrol: The biggest engine of the bunch and with a V8 under the bonnet you’re going to get performance thanks to 450PS, with a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. Just don’t expect it to be economical with the prospect of just 26mpg likely at best.

The BMW 6 Series is fairly straightforward on the trim level front, unlike some other cars in the range, which means looking for a used example much easier. Whichever option you go for there’s going to be a decent level of quality, with comfort and specification solid on each variant. Dakota leather upholstery is standard on most models, with post-facelift 650i versions wearing fancier Nappa leather.

• The BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible is available in SE trim, which come with interior trim strips finished in brushed aluminium, while American oak and dark grey poplar finishes were options.
