The DRIVE take on the Peugeot Boxer, is it the right car for you?

The Peugeot Boxer remains a thoroughly capable workhorse for businesses that prioritise carrying capacity, payload and value over refinement. Its muscular diesel engines cope well with heavy loads, the cargo area is broad and square, and the extensive range of body lengths, roof heights and conversion platforms should cover almost every commercial requirement.

Its age is increasingly difficult to ignore, though. The driving position is awkward, the ride rarely settles and the cabin becomes noisy at speed. A Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter feels more modern and polished, but the Boxer still makes sense when straightforward practicality matters more than how sophisticated a van feels from behind the wheel.

It is entirely normal for a van to remain in production for much longer than the average passenger car. Where a family hatchback or SUV might be replaced after seven or eight years, a successful commercial vehicle can survive for twice that long, particularly when regular updates keep its engines, equipment and safety technology competitive.

Even by those standards, however, the Peugeot Boxer is pushing the limits of longevity.

The basic third-generation van first appeared in 2006, while the considerably smarter model introduced in 2014 was an extensive update rather than a completely new design. Peugeot refreshed it again for 2024, fitting revised diesel engines, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, a cleaner dashboard and additional driver-assistance technology.

Those changes have helped the Boxer remain relevant, but they cannot entirely disguise the age of its foundations. The unusual driving position, busy ride and high motorway noise levels all lag behind the standards set by newer large vans.

For many operators, those shortcomings will be less important than the Boxer’s considerable practical strengths. It is available in a broad selection of lengths, roof heights, weights and body configurations, so businesses can choose a van that fits their work rather than adapting their work to suit the vehicle.

The range extends beyond the familiar Panel Van to include Crew Van, Glazed Van, Chassis Cab, Chassis Crew Cab and Platform Cab derivatives. Peugeot also supports factory-approved conversions for operators requiring a dropside, tipper, box body or other specialist configuration.

The Boxer is closely related to the Citroen Relay, Fiat Ducato and Vauxhall Movano. All four brands now sit within the Stellantis group and their large vans share much of their underlying structure and mechanical hardware.

That relationship gives buyers more choice. Should the right Boxer be unavailable, or another manufacturer offer stronger finance terms, one of its sister models may provide almost identical capability with a different badge and dealer package.

The current diesel range uses a 2.2-litre BlueHDi engine with either 140PS or 180PS. The 140PS version is available with a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic, while the more powerful 180PS engine comes exclusively with the automatic transmission.

Most operators will find the 140PS engine entirely sufficient. It produces useful pulling power from low revs and builds speed without needing to be worked particularly hard, even when there is a meaningful load in the back.

The automatic gearbox makes more sense for drivers spending long days in traffic or carrying out frequent urban deliveries. Its shifts are smooth enough and it removes the repeated clutch work that can make a manual large van tiring in congested conditions.

The 180PS model is reserved for a heavier 4.25-tonne version and is better suited to demanding conversions, regular towing or work close to the Boxer’s maximum payload. It is unnecessary for most ordinary Panel Van users.

The 140PS 2.2-litre BlueHDi with the six-speed manual gearbox is the best choice for most businesses.

The engine’s strongest characteristic is its low-rev muscle. It responds cleanly without needing to be extended and can move a loaded Boxer at a useful pace without creating excessive noise.

The manual gearbox is not especially precise, but its high dashboard position places the lever within easy reach. Once accustomed to the slightly loose shift action, most drivers should find it straightforward to use.

The eight-speed automatic is worth considering where the van will spend much of its working life in towns and cities. It removes the effort of constant clutch work, changes ratios unobtrusively and generally keeps the engine within its most useful operating range.

It does cost more, consumes slightly more fuel in official testing and can reduce the available payload, so it is not automatically the better choice for every operator.

The 180PS diesel is available in the heavier 4.25-tonne L4H2 model. Its additional performance should prove useful when operating close to the maximum permitted weight or pulling a substantial trailer, but there is little reason to choose it for light or medium-duty delivery work.

Selecting the correct body size is ultimately more important than choosing the most powerful engine.

An L2H2 is likely to suit the broadest range of users. It offers 11.5m³ of load volume, a 3,120mm load floor and enough internal height for most adults to stand upright, yet remains more manageable than the longest versions.

The L3H2 extends the load floor to 3,705mm and increases volume to 13m³. It provides a useful compromise for businesses that carry long or bulky items but do not need the tallest roof.

Choosing the L3H3 increases capacity to 15m³ by raising the internal height to 2,172mm. The L4H2 offers the same overall load volume but combines it with the longest available load floor.

At the top of the range, the L4H3 provides 17m³ of capacity. It can carry a huge amount of equipment or cargo, but its 6.36-metre length and near-2.8-metre height require more careful route planning.

A larger Boxer costs more to buy, consumes more fuel and is harder to manoeuvre. Its additional body weight can also reduce the amount of cargo it is legally permitted to carry.

The most efficient approach is to choose the smallest version that can comfortably accommodate the business’s regular loads, rather than specifying extra space that will rarely be used.

Current diesel Boxer Panel Van prices range from £33,540 to £40,547 on the road excluding VAT.

The entry point is the L2H1 3.5-tonne BlueHDi 140 manual in Professional specification. The popular L2H2 costs £34,350 as a Professional or £35,650 in the better-equipped Asphalt trim.

An L2H2 Professional with the eight-speed automatic costs £36,450 excluding VAT.

The L3H2 BlueHDi 140 manual costs £35,160 in Professional specification or £36,460 as an Asphalt. Choosing the automatic Professional increases the price to £37,260.

A higher-roof L3H3 manual is £35,970, while the longer L4H2 and maximum-volume L4H3 cost £36,420 and £37,230 respectively with the 140PS manual powertrain.

The most expensive current diesel Panel Van is the 4.25-tonne L4H2 BlueHDi 180 automatic Professional, priced at £40,547 excluding VAT.

These are manufacturer on-the-road prices rather than guaranteed transaction figures. Fleet discounts, dealer contributions, finance support and pre-registered stock can all make a substantial difference to the amount a business ultimately pays.

Peugeot’s live configurator quotes a lower manufacturer recommended basic price before on-road costs, so comparisons between listings should always be made on a like-for-like basis.

The wider Boxer line-up includes chassis-based models for specialist conversions. These may appear cheaper in their basic form, but the cost of the finished body must be added before making a meaningful comparison.

Used diesel Boxers provide substantial savings. Older examples can cost less than £10,000, while later vans with lower mileages generally sit between the low teens and low £20,000s before VAT.

Where the budget allows, a post-2024 Boxer is worth seeking out for its revised diesel engines, newer automatic gearbox, updated dashboard and stronger standard safety package.

The Citroen Relay is the closest alternative because it is mechanically almost identical. Price, availability and the quality of the local dealer are likely to matter more than any difference in how the two vans drive or carry a load.

The Fiat Ducato shares the same basic platform and is particularly popular with motorhome manufacturers and specialist conversion companies.

The Vauxhall Movano is the fourth member of the Stellantis large-van family. It may appeal to fleets already operating Vauxhall commercial vehicles or those with an established relationship with a local dealer.

The Ford Transit is a stronger all-rounder. Its driving position feels more natural, it is better controlled on the road and it has the support of a vast conversion and servicing network. Equivalent versions may cost more, however.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is more refined and feels considerably more sophisticated inside. Its purchase and repair costs can be higher, but its comfort makes it particularly attractive for high-mileage work.

The Volkswagen Crafter also has a more car-like driving position and higher-quality cabin, while the latest Renault Master offers a much newer design and competitive efficiency.

What's the interior like in the Peugeot Boxer?

Climb into the Boxer, and it is quite a climb, and you will find a cabin designed around durability and ease of use rather than visual flair. The 2024 update made the dashboard smarter and less cluttered, but Peugeot sensibly retained physical controls for important functions.

The high seating position allows the driver to look over much of the surrounding traffic, which helps when placing such a large vehicle on the road.

Forward visibility is not perfect, however. The thick windscreen pillars can obscure approaching traffic at junctions, while the pillars and large mirrors can combine to block the view of the inside kerb during tight turns.

The split door mirrors themselves provide a broad view down the sides of the van. Their lower sections help the driver monitor the rear wheels and judge the Boxer’s position relative to kerbs and nearby obstacles.

Rear parking sensors are standard, while a reversing camera is a worthwhile addition. It is particularly valuable on L3 and L4 models, where the solid load area and long rear overhang make it difficult to judge the space behind the van.

The Boxer’s unconventional driving position remains the cabin’s biggest weakness.

Rather than using a conventional lever to raise or lower the driver’s seat, separate catches alter the front and rear angles of the seat base. Finding the right combination can involve more trial and error than it should.

Even once adjusted, the driver sits rather upright. The pedals are positioned low in relation to the seat and the steering wheel adjusts for reach but not height, making it harder for some drivers to settle into a natural position.

Anybody moving from a modern Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter is likely to notice the difference immediately.

The cab is wide enough for three adults to sit side by side. The centre passenger has less room and a less supportive seat than those on either side, but three colleagues can travel together without feeling excessively cramped.

Storage is generous, with large door pockets, dashboard trays, cupholders and several compartments for phones, paperwork and smaller tools.

The Boxer can be ordered in a huge range of forms, but most buyers will choose a Panel Van with between 10m³ and 17m³ of load volume.

The load area is 1,870mm wide at its broadest point and 1,422mm between the wheelarches, allowing a standard Euro pallet to fit across the width.

Load length ranges from 3,120mm in an L2 model to 4,070mm in an L4. Internal height extends from 1,662mm in an H1 van to 2,172mm in an H3.

All Panel Vans have twin rear doors that open to 180 degrees and a sliding loading door on the passenger side.

A second sliding door is available on selected versions. It can improve access for multi-drop operations, although fitting one reduces the uninterrupted side wall available for racking and shelving.

Payload varies considerably according to body length, roof height, engine, transmission and Gross Vehicle Weight.

The L2H1 3.5-tonne manual has an indicative payload of 1,450kg, while the L2H2 carries around 1,425kg. The L3H2 manual is rated at approximately 1,375kg, falling to around 1,315kg with the automatic gearbox.

The larger 3.5-tonne bodies carry less because the additional structure increases the van’s unladen weight. The L4H3, for example, has an indicative payload of around 1,260kg.

The maximum current diesel Panel Van figure is approximately 2,030kg for the 4.25-tonne L4H2 BlueHDi 180 automatic.

That headline figure should not be applied to the rest of the range. A van’s driver, passengers, fuel, tools, racking and optional equipment all count towards its working weight, so the plated payload of the exact vehicle must always be checked.

Diesel towing limits range from approximately 2,250kg to 3,000kg for a braked trailer, depending on the version.

Current Boxer Panel Vans measure from 5,413mm to 6,363mm long, around 2,050mm wide without their mirrors and between 2,254mm and 2,779mm high.

It will come as no surprise that a van of this size can feel cumbersome, although the light steering makes low-speed manoeuvres less physically demanding than expected.

The steering is slow, so parking requires plenty of movement at the wheel. The generous amount of steering lock does at least produce a tighter turning circle than the Boxer’s dimensions might suggest.

Larger versions have a considerable rear overhang, which swings out as the van turns. Drivers need to leave additional clearance around walls, parked vehicles and street furniture.

Height is equally important. H2 and H3 models will not pass under many car-park barriers, while some urban delivery routes impose restrictions that may rule out taller versions altogether.

The standard diesel Boxer uses analogue instruments and a basic central multimedia display with DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

It is a straightforward system rather than a particularly sophisticated one, and its modest display looks dated next to the technology in newer rivals.

The optional Techno Plus Pack is worth considering for drivers who will spend long working days in the van.

It upgrades the central display to a 10-inch touchscreen and adds a seven-inch digital instrument panel, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, extra USB connections, wireless phone charging and automatic climate control.

Despite the additional features, the interface remains relatively easy to understand. In a working vehicle, being able to reach navigation and telephone functions quickly is more valuable than having elaborate graphics or complex menus.

Physical heating and ventilation controls remain on the dashboard, allowing the driver to make adjustments without taking unnecessary attention from the road.

The Boxer’s cabin is built to withstand demanding commercial use.

Most surfaces are formed from hard, wipe-clean plastic rather than soft-touch material, but that is appropriate in a van likely to encounter muddy clothes, dusty equipment and frequent loading.

The various buttons and switches operate with a reasonably slick action, while the redesigned dashboard has a cleaner and more contemporary appearance than the unit it replaced.

It cannot match a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter for perceived quality, but the finish is robust and appropriate for a working vehicle.

What's the Peugeot Boxer like to drive?

The Boxer becomes manageable once the driver has adjusted to its dimensions, but the restless ride, slow steering and high noise levels reveal the age of the underlying design.

Peugeot does not publish a particularly useful 0 to 62mph figure for the Boxer. Low-speed pulling power, loaded performance and the ability to maintain momentum on a gradient are far more relevant in a large commercial vehicle.

The 140PS diesel feels muscular from the bottom of the rev range, allowing the Boxer to gather speed without needing to be worked hard.

If traffic slows or the van encounters a steep hill, a downshift may be required to restore momentum, particularly when carrying a heavy load. The engine is flexible enough that this does not become a constant chore.

The automatic gearbox makes life easier in congestion and generally keeps the engine within the useful part of its rev range without holding lower gears for too long.

The 180PS version has not formed part of the original road test, so its recommendation is based on specification rather than a separate driving assessment. Its additional output should be useful when the Boxer is operating near its 4.25-tonne Gross Vehicle Weight or towing regularly, but most buyers will not need it.

The Boxer is not a van that encourages hurried driving. Its height, length and weight naturally persuade the driver to adopt a measured approach, particularly away from broad motorway lanes.

The light steering reduces effort around town, but its slow response means the Boxer never feels particularly agile. At higher speeds it remains stable enough, provided the driver uses smooth inputs and allows for the effect of crosswinds on tall-roof versions.

Ride comfort is less convincing.

Even on roads that appear smooth, the suspension has a jittery and unsettled character. Rougher surfaces introduce more pronounced movement, while sharper potholes can send an abrupt impact through the cab.

Adding weight to the load area settles the van slightly, as it does with most commercial vehicles, but does not transform the ride. A Ford Transit or Volkswagen Crafter feels calmer and more controlled over the same road.

The diesel engine produces a traditional commercial-vehicle rumble and transmits some vibration through the pedals and steering wheel. It rarely needs to be revved hard, so the noise remains manageable during everyday driving.

At motorway speeds, the engine fades into the background but wind and tyre noise become more noticeable. An unlined load area can amplify the effect further.

The automatic gearbox improves ease of use by removing the need for repeated manual changes, making it the more relaxing option for stop-and-start delivery work.

The current Boxer received a five-star result in Euro NCAP’s 2025 Commercial Van Safety assessment, replacing the Gold classification awarded under the organisation’s previous system.

Standard driver-assistance equipment includes automatic emergency braking, lane support, traffic-sign recognition, intelligent speed assistance and driver-attention monitoring.

Three front airbags are fitted, while additional side and curtain airbags are available according to specification.

Optional equipment can include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a digital rear-view mirror.

The Boxer’s safety specification changed considerably during its long production life. Buyers considering a used example should therefore check the equipment fitted to the individual vehicle rather than assuming it matches the current model.

Running costs: What it's like to live with a Peugeot Boxer

The 140PS manual should deliver the lowest overall running costs, although body size, load and driving pattern will have a greater influence on fuel consumption than the difference between the available engine outputs.

Official combined economy ranges from 21.4mpg to 44.8mpg across the current diesel line-up.

The 140PS manual Panel Vans produce the strongest figures, with official ranges of 30.1mpg to 44.8mpg depending on body size and weight.

Automatic versions are rated at between 23.5mpg and 40.4mpg, while the 4.25-tonne 180PS automatic records between 21.4mpg and 37.2mpg.

Peugeot’s public model information gives an overall diesel range of 27.4mpg to 43.9mpg, but derivative-specific figures vary according to configuration and homologation data.

Those broad figures reflect differences in body style, test weight and fitted equipment. A return in the low-to-mid 30s is a more realistic expectation for many operators, while a heavily loaded L4H3 working in urban traffic may achieve substantially less.

Peugeot says the 2024 engine updates improved efficiency compared with the powertrains they replaced. In everyday use, specifying the smallest suitable body, keeping motorway speed under control and avoiding unnecessary idling will make the greatest difference.

The Boxer has a three-year commercial-vehicle warranty.

Mileage is unlimited during the first two years, while cover in the third year is limited to 100,000 miles.

Service requirements depend on the vehicle’s specification and pattern of use. A complete maintenance record is particularly important where the van carries heavy loads, covers high annual mileage or operates in demanding conditions.

Current diesel Boxer models generally sit in insurance groups 36 to 38.

The final premium will depend on the body, Gross Vehicle Weight, annual mileage, type of business use, security arrangements and where the van is kept overnight.

Specialist conversions may require a dedicated commercial-vehicle policy rather than standard Panel Van cover.

A Boxer with a revenue weight of no more than 3,500kg is normally taxed as a Light Goods Vehicle.

The standard Light Goods Vehicle rate is £360 for 12 months in 2026/27.

Versions above 3,500kg fall into the goods-vehicle tax system. Their precise treatment depends on the vehicle’s plated weight, axle configuration and taxation class.

Operators should check the V5C registration document for the individual van before calculating its annual tax liability.

What trims are available with the Peugeot Boxer?

Professional is the core trim across most of the current diesel range.

Standard equipment includes manual air conditioning, cruise control with a speed limiter, rear parking sensors, electric front windows, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

Asphalt is offered on selected L2H2 and L3H2 manual Panel Vans.

It adds a larger touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reversing camera, front parking sensors, automatic climate control, automatic lights and wipers, front foglights and high-beam assistance.

Professional provides the essentials for a working van, while Asphalt is likely to be worth the additional cost for drivers spending long days behind the wheel.

The diesel range includes Panel Vans from L2H1 to L4H3, along with Crew Van, Glazed Van, Chassis Cab, Crew Cab, Platform Cab, dropside and tipper derivatives.

The 140PS diesel is offered with manual or automatic transmission in selected versions. The 180PS engine is reserved for the 4.25-tonne L4H2 automatic.
